- A thin layer of photocatalysts (mainly TiO₂) is coated on all the surfaces in the car cabin, walls, ceilings, etc.

- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) is a collective name for a group of hazardous gases.
- VOCs are toxic and are detrimental to our health in many different ways.
- The commonly known VOCs are benzene, toluene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, etc.
- Some of these are known cancer causing agents (like benzene) while others can cause serious heart, throat and nose problems.

- A catalyst is a substance that modifies the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed in the process.
- Catalysts are commonly found in our daily lives like the enzymes found in our bodies serve as catalysts to accelerate bodily chemical reactions. The catalytic converter in the car exhaust system uses heat-activated platinum-iridium catalyst, which oxidises carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon pollutants in the exhaust gases, to carbon dioxide and water.

- "Photo-catalyst" implies that the catalyst requires radiant energy to modify the rate of a chemical reaction.
- Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a commonly used, highly stable and non-toxic (and thus harmless to humans) photocatalyst.
- TiO2 has been an approved food additive in USA since 1968 in Japan since 1983.

1. When the IOGENIC^TM treated surface is exposed to radiant energy (UV and/or visible light), electricity is generated. The TiO₂is now in an excitation state and a hole (h+) is generated while an electron (e-) is intensified.

2. An electron, in the presence of oxygen in the air, is transformed into superoxide anion. The hole, on the other hand, is transformed into hydroxyl radical by moisture in the air. These are known as active oxygen.

3. Organic substances like germs and microbials, have molecule structures that are held together by carbon-oxygen or carbon-hydrogen bonds.

4. When these organic substances get in contact with the active oxygen, these bonds are broken. And the residue is harmless carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water vapour (H₂O).

5. Active oxygen is ever present on the IOGENIC^TM treated surface in the presence of light. Being a much stronger oxidising agent than sodium hypochoride or ozone, all organic matters will be oxidized very rapidly, resulting in the formation of CO₂ and H₂O.

6. As such, the active oxygen will not be freely suspended in the air. Thus the superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical will not be absorbed by humans. Neither will they accumulate in an enclosed area.
